What is your favorite book?

Too hard to narrow it down! Can I give you my top 50? I might say Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Taylor’s Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, and Appelt’s Bubba and Beau are some that tie for first.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love hiking. I love singing, though it’s sad to me that my voice is thin and frequently out of tune. Most of all, I love art–drawing, painting and making various things around the house. And I like watching movies at home with my family in my pajamas.

If you could be anything, what would you be?

Someone tall. Or the person who designs the clouds. Or a female Kirk Franklin. It could be cool to be a tree.

What was your most meaningful experience in childhood?

Growing up at a dry cleaners that my parents worked at over 70 hours a week. I did my homework there, I napped there, I played there pretending to be a Jedi between the racks of clothes, and I tried to help out–like making Taco Bell runs for my parents who barely had time for a break. They taught me hard work and imagination. And through all the good and difficult times, in plenty and in want, I experienced God as very good and near to me.

What is God speaking to you lately?

I’ve been meditating on John 13 for awhile now. Jesus’ love never ceases to amaze me. Each day his mercies truly are new. I feel incredibly rich in his tender attention to me, his complete knowledge of me and his calling to friendship. Sometimes I get caught up in mission and exciting activity, but I don’t want to forget that it starts and ends with resting in his full love.
